Mexicana Elegante Shawl
This elegant shawl was sold at The International Crafts Fair in Mexico City a couple of years ago, together with several other shawls, which you can see in the post Mexicana Shawls. Hence the name for this one and all other shawls from this collection.
The shawl is still very popular and some ladies have asked me for instructions. That’s why I decided to write this post and written tutorial for knitting and crocheting, since this piece is a combination of those two techniques.

So, the shawl was made using knitting and crocheting techniques. For both techniques you will need intermediate knowledge. The upper part of the shawl is knitted on 2 needles, and the ribbed texture is obtained by two basic stitches – stockinette stitch and garter stitch. The bottom part is crocheted. Stitches used are double crochet, treble crochet, chain, single crochet.
Material
- About 200 gr of yarn for needles/hook 3 to 4 mm (US needles 3 to 6, hook D-3 to G-6)
- Knitting needles 4 mm (US size 6, UK size 8)
- Crochet hook 4 mm (US G-6)
- 2 markers

The size of the shawl can vary depending on the type of yarn and your manner of knitting/crocheting, i.e. whether you work loosely or tightly.
Approximate dimensions of the shawl are the following:
Height – 64 cm / 25 in
Upper edge length – 130 cm / 51 in

On the PATTERN A: Stockinette Stitch instructions – Row 1 appears to be missing and starts with Row 2?
Hi, Linda! Thank you very much. I wrote the Stockinette Stitch from 2. row on purpose so that people don’t get confused with the initial 1. row of the shawl which is different than the other, later first-row repeats of the Stockinette Stitch. But I guess I caused more confusion instead 🙂 Do you have a suggestion? Maybe for the starting row of the shawl I could write “foundation row” instead of Row 1? And then to change numbers in stockinette – Rows 1 and 2 instead of Rows 2 and 3. How does that sound? It would probably be more clear. I hope I haven’t caused even more bewilderness with this comment, haha! 😀
Thank you for the free pattern. This is a beautiful shawl, and after reading through the pattern I see a question that is very unclear. Under the knitting instructions, Pattern A, you give directions for rows 1, 2, 3, and then you skip row 4, and give directions for rows 5-10. Could you explain what to do in row 4?

I forgot to say that in the stockinette stitch pattern the repeat should be from rows 4 to 10, not from 5 to 10. Also, I found a mistake in the garter stitch pattern, so, please, take a look at the corrected pattern.
