Instructions

Abbreviations

st(s). = stitch(es)

sc = single crochet

n. = next

rnd. = round

*…* = repeat to the end of round

Work with double strand and hook no. 3.5 (US 4/E) to make the hat firm. Work single crochet inserting the hook into the back loop of each stitch. Crochet in spirals, i.e. do not work the initial chain at the beginning of the round, because you want the hat to be neat, without that ugly “seam” that is created when working in rounds. Using a piece of contrasting yarn or a marker, mark the beginning of each round, and as the work progresses, move the marker up to be able to follow the work.

The Hat

Begin with ch4 and close in a circle.
Rnd. 1 – 8sc in the circle
Rnd. 2 – double each st., i.e. 2sc in each st. (16sts).
Rnd.3 – work 2sc in every second st, i.e. *1sc, 2sc in the n. st.* (24sts).
Rnd.4 – work 2sc in every third st, i.e. *2sc, 2sc in the n. st.* (32sts).

Rnd. 5 – work 2sc in every fourth st, i.e. *3sc, 2sc in the n. st.* (40sts).

Continue adding sts in this way until rnd. 14. (112sts)

Rnd. 15 and 16. – 1sc in each st. (112sts).
Rnd. 17 – decrease every 14th st., i.e. work each 13th and 14th sts. together. (104sts).
Rnds 18-29 – 1sc in each st. (104sts).
Rnd 30 – work 2sc in every second st, i.e. *1sc, 2sc in the n. st.* (156sts).
Rnd 31-34 – 1sc in each st. (156sts).
Rnd 35 – work 2sc in every 6th st, i.e. *5sc, 2sc in the n.st.* (182sts).
Rnd 36-39 – 1sc in each st. (182sts).

Rnd 40 – work 2sc in every 7th st, i.e. *6sc, 2sc in the n.st.* (208sts).
Rnd 41 –  1sc in each st. (208sts).

Working over the wire

Rnd 42 – 1sc in each st. Work with the wire in this rnd. See video on this page, or watch the video on my You Tube channel. Let the end of a wire stick out about 7-8 cm to the right of the hook, insert the hook into the next st. grab the yarn under the wire, do the sc, and the wire stays inside that sc. Repeat to the end of the rnd.
Leave the other end of the wire to stick out to the left of the hook too and cut it. Finish the hat by working 2 slip sts, cut the yarn. Weave in ends on the wrong side of the hat.

Press the brim with your palms to make it flat, and stretch the work just a little bit so the wire sits in it neatly and evenly. Cut off the sticking ends of the wire and tuck them in the sts. If necessary, iron the brim over a wet cloth and leave to dry completely.

Loops

Make 2 loops – leave a long tail (about 20cm) before starting the foundation chain of 11 sts and work 10sc. Turn. Work another row of 10sc, inserting the hook into the back loops only. Also leave a 20cm long tail, cut yarn and pull through the last st. Make the other loop in the same way. Using a yarn needle, attach the loops to the sides of the hat.

Starching the hat (optional)

This hat, made from thick yarn and hook no. 3.5, should be very firm and won’t need starching. However, if your hat turns out to be rather soft, you can stiffen it with a mixture of sugar and water. The starching procedure is explained here.

Finishing

Once the hat is dry, you can decorate it with a belt. Cut excess of an old but usable belt and shape a new edge with sharp scissors. If necessary, drill more holes, pull the belt through the loops and secure the ends. You can also decorate the hat with a metal chain or a silk scarf.

    1. Hi Debra! Thanks for your nice comment and compliment. This page IS the pattern page for the hat. And it’s written in US terms. What exactly is your question? Sorry, I didn’t understand. Maybe you opened the page in Serbian. On the main menu on top of the page there is a LANGUAGE button where you can switch the page to English. I hope this helps.
