Poncho Mexicana With A Hood is more than just a cozy layer—it carries a story of craftsmanship, tradition, and international recognition.
This unique crocheted poncho, made from beautifully assembled square motifs, was originally designed for The International Crafts Fair in Mexico City. It was one of many shawls and wraps I sent to the fair in 2018, forming the foundation of the “Mexicana” collection. My handmade designs had already found success in Mexico in 2017 and earlier in 2015, and this particular poncho remains a cherished piece from that journey.
Selling my handmade shawls and wraps at the International Crafts Fair in Mexico City was a significant moment for me as a designer. The event provided an opportunity to share my work with a broader audience and celebrate the beauty of crochet on an international level. The sale went exceptionally well, reinforcing my belief in the power of handcrafted fashion. The Poncho Mexicana with a Hood, in particular, was a standout piece, representing both creativity and a blend of different cultures in frames of a universal craft—crochet.
A Timeless Patchwork Design
The Poncho Mexicana is crafted using a patchwork technique, where square motifs are joined together to create a seamless, flowing garment. Depending on the size, the poncho consists of either six (S/M) or eight (L/XL) motifs, ensuring a perfect fit and beautiful drape. The addition of a hood enhances its comfort and practicality, making it a stylish yet functional piece for the colder seasons.
Design
This poncho consists of 6 or 8 large square motifs, which depends on the size. Two motifs make up the hood, and the rest are for the front and back panels. It is decorated with fringe and a tassel on top of the hood. The yarn used for the blue and white poncho is a selection of 4 colors, while the grey and orange one used up 5 colors of different yarn. Both items are crocheted from blend yarn. The exact amount of yarn is given in the PDF instructions. Yarn used in both models are leftovers of blend fibers.

Making this poncho requires lower-intermediate crocheting skills and being familiar
with round crochet. I would certainly encourage experienced beginners to give this
project a try and improve their crocheting skills. Stitches used in this pattern are chain,
single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and treble crochet.
